About the Author
VIRGINIA McALESTER, was educated at Radcliffe and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is a founding member and past president of Preservation Dallas and also of Friends of Fair Park, the support group for a National Historic Landmark. She serves as an advisor emeritus for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She is the author of�The Making of a Historic District: Swiss Avenue, Dallas, Texas, a 40-page booklet "how-to" published by the National Trust in 1975 that historic groups across the country have used as a guide in creating their historic districts. She is coauthor of�The Homes of the Park Cities, Dallas: Great American Suburbs.

An Essential Reference

I worked for a few years as an architectural historian doing historic building surveys and wore out at least 2 or 3 copies of this wonderful book. There are lots of "pocket guides" to architectural styles which will tell you that yup, that thing with a turret is a Victorian. But this book is a priceless resource for anyone with more than a casual interest in American domestic architecture. The McAlesters focus on ordinary houses (rather than rare architectural landmarks) and cover everything from dog-run log cabins to Greek Revival cottages to 1950s ranch houes. The writing is clear, the level of detail is just right, and the book has hundreds of black and white photos and illustrations.
I learned about domestic architecture to make a living, but even 20 years later still enjoy it as a hobby. If you're a professional in the field, this book is essential. But I would strongly recommend it to amateur enthusiasts as well. Once you learn to recognize housing types, every drive becomes a history lesson.

A complete & entertaining education for old-house fans!

If you are an old-house fan, this book is the equivalent of a college education. Here are some reasons this book is both entertaining and useful:
It starts with chapters on basic structure: shapes of houses, style of construction, ornamentation, etc. There are simple, remarkably clear drawings accompanying all this that will serve to give you a kind of 'vocabulary' to interpret houses when you run across something new (for example, a dozen different types of dormers - what are they all called?). (These involve almost entirely external elements, for detailed interiors you will need another book.)
Lots of delicious historical background about how history and technological advances changed housing. For example, the authors divide folk housing into "pre" and "post-railroad" because not until railroads made building materials nationally accessible did a national set of housing styles develop.
Following this, there are a series of chapters describing different styles (i.e., Victorian, Tudor, etc.), starting with the characteristic details, when and where the style is found, etc. The McAlisters do a particularly good job on regional variations; there are some remarkable maps showing the prevelance of different styles in different states.
The graphics are fantastic and plentiful. The simple stylzed drawings of building elements (rooflines, doorways, windows, etc.) clearly distinguish one detail from another, while the photographs make you want to pop into the car and drive all over to see the real houses themselves.
One note: there is a table, starting around p. 55, that will make the book much easier to use as a 'field guide' (i.e., driving around looking at houses the way birders look at birds). This chart helps you use key identifying features to determine the most likely style of the house. For example, my house has a steeply pitched roof and multliple gables, so it's probably a Tudor. From there you can go to the proper chapter. Without this chart you'll have to search the whole book.

Of the several dozen books I own of American house styles, this is the only book that systematically breaks down every American house style from the Native American tipi to Modern architecture. For every style, it gives the two critcal elements of architecture, the form/shape of the houses and their details. As a land developer, I use this book as a pattern book for the design criteria of homes built in my neighborhoods - every homeowner gets a copy! This is truly the bible of American house styles.

Great book to learn YARN!!!

I'm one of the technical reviewers of this book. The book is written in a very simple language and very easy to understand. Even you do not know anything about Big Data, Hadoop and Yarn, you will find this book very easy to follow and you will be surprised how much you can learn after reading the book. This book also has very rich content of technical details and sample code. It is very useful for technical practitioners who want to write their own YARN applications. It also has the latest information on YARN integration with Spark and Storm for real-time analytics.
This book goes great with another YARN book I reviewed – YARN Essentials. Compared to YARN Essentials, this book has more hands on technical details. But the author did a very good job of explaining the concepts at the beginning of each chapter before going into technical details. You will have a comprehensive understanding of the YARN architecture and also be able to do hands on develop&admin work.
I am specifically enjoy the chapter related to YARN integration with Spark and Storm. Hadoop is known for its batch processing power. With the new features such as YARN, Spark, Storm available in Hadoop 2.0, we will be able to solve our challenges related to real-time analytics, which is critical for businesses to be successful in this Big Data era.
I'm happy having gotten the opportunity to work on this book and I'm very well pleased with the result. I believe this book is a great asset to any people who are interested in YARN!

totality and the flux

The central questioning of Radical Hermeneutics revolves around the question of the flux, the contingent, flowing reality that philosophy has traditionally tried to stem/structure and receives explicit attention in the philosophy of Husserl, Parmenides, Kierkegaard, etc. Caputo follows Derrida who follows Levinas in pointing out the totalizing quality of systematic, speculative thought (which structures the flow). A similar argument runs through Kierkeggaard, e.g. Climacus' questioning as to when the promised grand plan will arive. Caputo is outlining a strand of the inversion of Platonic thoughts, the stress on Becoming instead of Being. He continues what Climacus' started in making things more difficult for a culture and time that focuses on making things easier.

Caputo himself would recognize he doesn't have the final word. inherent in his project is the need for further deconstruction and loosening. His harsh treatment of Gadamer gets rethought in his "more radical hermeneutics". Recommended, challanging. Read in combination with Rorty.

So what next, after this 'book' has 'ended'?

The philosophical systems of Western philosophy are a 'fast way out of the difficulties of life', the author argues. Metaphysics is a betrayal of this fact, as it seeks to 'put the best face on existence', and make things look easy. Hermeneutics, via the deconstructive project, on the contrary, seeks to 'recapture the hardness of life' and therefore not seek 'the fast way out of the back door of the flux'. The author wants to carry through Heidegger's project in Being and Time and 'restore the original difficulty of 'Being'. It is a hermeneutic project that begins with Heidegger as 'radical thinking' and follows the process of its radicalization, keeping faith to the 'philosophers of the flux': Nietzsche, Heidegger, Kierkegaard, Husserl, and Meister Eckhart.
Regardless if one is in agreement with the author, his utterances have become fashionable as of late, and not just in hideaway cafes in Europe, but in professional circles of philosophy. However alien the ideas may seem in this book, it is an undeniable fact they grew out of Western philosophy. They are not a 'logical' consequence, but a consequence of the rebellion against rational 'system building', this rebellion beginning in the nineteenth century. The system builders of Western philosophy, such as Plato, Aquinas, Kant, and Hegel, sought a comprehensive view of existence, a view that holds to the idea that reality is understandable, and meaningful, and can be expressed via a rational framework.
But ideas when entrenched encourage playful and sometimes radical antithesis. The mistake that the system builders made was that they assumed the systems they constructed were closed, comprehensive in their scope, and not needing further development. Settling into a local minimum, their ideas were jostled from without by those who caution against their sterility. Delighting in the use of philosophical wrecking balls, these new philosophers were all too willing to demolish the huge edifices built by the philosophers of old. Dancing with ecstacy after the damage was done, they then proposed a new viewpoint, one that attempts to accept the dynamism of Being, and not assume the existence of any epistemic or ontological fixed points.
Thus the author wallows in this new (anti?)structure. To paraphrase a line from the book, his ideas (organize?) themselves into ferocious animals and then descend upon (philosophy), devouring everything in their path. The author holds up the Heidegger primordial 'Verstehen' as that which allows knowledge to work itself out in the process of existence. Reality for the author is a collection of torrential currents, extreme perturbations, and circumstances that shape the situation, and which consequently 'Verstehen' provides interpretive insight.
Metaphysics, says the author, must be kept in check, so that it does not dominate the text, arrest the play, recenter the system, and stabilize the flux. This will break the code, and reintroduce the nostalgiac longing for the origin. Thus metaphysics must undergo a 'radical hermeneutics', somewhat along the lines of Jacques Derrida in holding to the 'uselessness of signs' and a rejection of 'a priori grammar'. We need our fictions, the author argues, for we cannot function 'without the wildness of play'. Imposing normality is a measure of stilling the flux. Authority must always be interrogated, and our fixation on repetition, those temporary stabilizations of the flow must not be mistaken for a grounding of normality in principle.
Reason, for the author, is a central power, held by the military, industrial, and scientific authorities of administered society. What 'should' we do then? The author's answer is an 'ethics of dissemination', which arises precisely from the foundering of metaphysics. The morality of the author is be one of a 'community of mortals', which is held together by common fears and lack of metaphysical foundation. Huddling together in the face of the chilling hermeneutics, humility and compassion are the (natural?) consequences, according to the author. After all, 'we do not know who we are', he concludes.
After reading this book, one might ask: so what next in the history of philosophy? Deconstruction has reacted with enthusiasm against metaphysics, but it has also now been codified and transformed itself into an ethic. Once dancing freestyle, it has now a precise set of choreographic principles, not to be deviated from. Once intoxicated with recklessness and shaking a stick, it has now become static doctrine, with all the 'rigidities' of the metaphysics it felt the need to rebel against.
Philosophy has not ended, nor should it. But what form will it take next in this, the most dynamic of all centuries? The technological flux of the 21st century is so far unequaled. Perhaps we can take a hint from both metaphysics and the radical hermeneutics of the author: we can drench ourselves with the overwhelming torrential flood of change, knowing full well that, using our signs, our symbols, our logic, it is we ourselves that create these changes.

Radical Rhetoric is good.

Caputo has flare, though maybe an axe to grind. There are some brillant pages in this book, especially Caputo's discussions of Husserl, and later (the begining of chapter 5) Husserl and Derrida. He also does a fine job showing how the Heidegger of On Time and Being relates with deconstruction (though I think he might even go farther). However, most of this book seems to give us a "noiseless Aufhebung", telling us how we must have difficult lives in order to get ride of the big bad metaphyics of presence. Fair enough, there are many problems with all systems (even Derrida's "system"), yet no one deny life is hard. Kierkegaard and Derrida are not the only ones to show us this, and certainly Gadamer (a philosopher Caputo really seems to have an axe to grind with) doesn't think we have an easy time of it.
In general, Caputo does a decent job of introducing themes, but I would suggest reading Kierkegaard, Husserl, Heidegger and Derrida (and especially Hegel) before one listens to Caputo.

Buy it, worth the money

If you have struggled with the nuances of the COT report, you will treasure this book. It clearly illustrates the crux of the matter which is price action and the reasons behind it. I would not recommend this for beginners, however. There is a subtlety in evaluating trend shifts and unless you have actually gotten your hands dirty digging into FX and traded for awhile could you appreciate the clarity of Steve Briese's explanations. I have been an active Forex trader for over 5 years and this book I consider to be one of my most valuable on the subject. Forex is not a get rich quick vehicle. There is a steep learning curve as most FX traders will honestly tell you--but this market can be most rewarding for those who spend the time and effort to learn.

Good book

This is a decent book on the committment of traders data (and the only I've read). It provides an overview and the author has dealt with the data for over 20 years so he knows the inns and outs of it. The author has a website, but he doesn't try to hardsell his own newsletter in the book. That is good.

There isn't much information in the book to tell you if the committment data is valualbe in the first place. There are some academic studies (not referenced) that show quite poor results, but there is a problem with academic studies. Only those showing efficient markets tends to get published. If somebody finds a holy-grail he will not publish it. So it is up to you to find out if the committment data can be useful. This book tells you what the data is and how it can be analysed. So don't expect a comprehensive trading system.

I would have loved the author to be more familiar with statistics. He presents a lot of correlation tables and I don't consider them useful. It smells like data mining to me. Still those tables are not at all relevant for the key themes of the book. So not really a problem.

I have written several short reviews on trading books. The best way is to compare the score on the books I've read. Many reviews on amazon.com are just glorious 5 star reviews. I use all five categories; sorry but everything isn't "great". Books rated 5 are very good. Books rated 4 are good solid books well worth reading. Books rated 3 can be bought by some people who read a lot or have very specific needs. Books rated 1 or 2 I would not recommend buying or reading. Naturally all in my humble opinion.

An Exceptional Read

Every older woman who is apprehensive about dating again needs to read this book. KarenLee Poter delivers a phenomenal guide to restoring self confidence and tenacity. Her book will help you to curtail all self doubt and apprehension you feel about dating. If I could sum it up in one word, I would use restorative.

I not only recommend this for women, but for men as well. It helped me better understand the obstacles faced older women. It will also give you insight in to becoming a better friend, boyfriend, and lover. I applaud Ms. Poter for her perseverance in broaching this subject, and redefining the meaning of the term COUGAR. I will definitely be purchasing her next book.

Good guide....With the CD

I have played the guitar for a few years...I never learned how to read until I started to use this guide book. It is only 42 pages, and can be completed within 2 weeks with practice. Over all the book does what it is intended to do: teach you how to read music and play classical guitar the correct way so that you can play more complicated songs after you finish the book...It's cheap and pretty good, but make sure wherever you get it that it comes with the CD, because it is crucial in order to benefit from the book...Good luck.

An excellent guitar method.

Nathaniel Gunod's "Classical Guitar for Beginners" makes an excellent companion book for Aaron Shearer's guitar methods. Gunod includes a little music theory in his book and covers playing guitar in higher positions up the fretboard. A very nice guitar method!

A little hard to understand for the total beginner. May be okay for someone who knows a little about guitar. Would be better to pay more and have DVD included.
