Originally purchased as a coffee-table book for the man-cave, this title is getting its money worth in pre-game looks alone from the Sunday get-togethers with the guys. Highly recommended! This is a very exciting book - full of statistical details, high quality pictures and descriptive information about games and plays I never knew about. Hearing the exciting plays, the teams and player comments about Super Bowls past, gave me a new perspective of the all time loved and most anticipated game of each year. As a woman who loves the game, I look forward to many more books written by Randy O. Williams and other NFL pros.

Great Read! Highly Recommended!

I would highly recommend 50 years, 50 Moments as a great historical read of the first 50 Super Bowls played. Everybody knows the scores and stats of most of the games played but what this book gives you are insights from former players, coaches, and owners that you will not get elsewhere. Jerry Rice and Randy Williams have literally beat the bushes to track down these people who give the reader a first person perspective of everything that transpired during the many Super Bowls played over the years. You will relive the greatest plays in history from players like Starr, Bradshaw and Brady to name a few. There are also some not so greatest plays that will come back to you after reading this book such as Garo Yepremian's ill-fated pass attempt in Super Bowl VII. A great non-play highlight would be the game winning drive for SF in Super Bowl XXIII and Joe Montana calling plays as well as giving a John Candy sighting while in the huddle. Again, this book has it all and I would highly recommend it! Sacramento, CA.

This was ideal for my fifth grader who was embarrassed that he had never learned cursive. This gave him lots of practice and immediately had him linking letters to make words which was important to making quick progress. He worked on this book over the summer and now that he is back in school, he feels very confident he can write in cursive!

Beginning Traditional Cursive

I purchased this with my 8 year old in mind. The schools don't seem to set cursive writing as a priority anymore, so we took it upon ourselves to teach our son cursive. It helps a lot to show him direction on letter formation. It could use more arrows to indicate direction, because he tries to start from the bottom. Highly recommend this for writing practice.

It is difficult to find a good cursive writing work book. I like this one very much. I only wish there hundreds of pages and cursive writing takes lots of practice. I book with so few pages is impractical. I need 20 books.

Superb account of why behaviorism matters

Here's Behaviorism without rats: the focus is on people. And here's excellent writing on Behaviorism but not by Skinner: it's encouraging that others have emerged capable of writing engagingly about Behaviorism.
Behaviorism's basis in pragmatism is presented and grounds the entire study. That focus on what works helps makes sense of Behaviorism's emphasis on determinism. Recognition of cause and effect is necessary for any science, even one of human behavior, but that is a pragmatic necessity and hence Behaviorism need not take a position on whether determinism is ultimately true.
Another closely-related theme of Behaviorism is well-covered here, namely the dangers of mentalism. Relying on invented stories or inventing them yourself is a great way to waste years or even a lifetime. One of the big contributions of Behaviorisms is in recognizing mentalisms and providing sound alternative explanations.
Behaviorism's study of verbal behaviors including rule-governed behavior, thinking in general and problem-solving in particular are especially well introduced by Baum. Skinner's "Verbal Behavior" is about 450 pages long and may be tough going without help; Baum covers the basics of verbal behavior in about 30 pages, then uses that effectively in later discussions such as that of human relationships.
One part I found helpful was the discussion of grammar and syntax, which compares the Behaviorist understanding to that of linguists such as Chomsky, who introduce, as a Behaviorist would say, the mentalism of an innate grammar capability. The Behaviorist alternative seems plausible as does its criticism of Chomsky in this regards. This seems an excellent topic upon which to see the difference between Behaviorist and cognitive approaches. Baum notes that Behaviorism does not reject the supplementary role of some truly scientific areas that contribute to cognitive "science" such as brain science, but he sees a lasting place for Radical Behaviorism as a science of behavior.
About 40% of the book is devoted to the Behaviorist understanding of social issues such as exploitation and cultural design. This section builds faithfully on material introduced earlier in the book.
A list of books for "Further Reading" is given at the end of each chapter, each with a sentence explaining its significance. Not only Behaviorist books but also those by opposing authors are included.
This is a meaty overview, with good examples and good attention to the philosophical implications of the Behaviorist views. I expect it would be useful as a introductory text on Behaviorism or as a good way to pull together what one may have read from Skinner and other Behaviorists.

If you're new to behaviorism, this clear, brief introduction will give you solid footing for any further encounters with the topic. It will let you have intelligent conversations about behaviorism and understand/critique what else you read.
If you've already learned some behaviorism, this is a good resource for review or clarification.
This book is about the *philosophy* of behaviorism, its concepts and assumptions. It is NOT a behavior analysis book -- it won't tell you how to make your child stop bedwetting or your dog quit smoking, except in the most general way.
Any student of psychology needs to understand behaviorism. This is a prime resource. Brief, concise, a fairly painless read.

Concise & readable. The ONLY book you will need for the registry or full understanding of MRI.

"Totally Accessible MRI" is, from start to finish, an eloquent and concise guide to the true principles of MRI you will need to know for the registry or, simply, a better understanding of your occupation. Lipton incorporates a bit of humor, simple-yet-effective diagrams, and a clear & logical analysis of MRI. The layout of the book perfect.

I've read a plethora of MRI-related textbooks including (but not limited to): MIC Modules, Berlex Modules, most of the "Springer" series (i.e., "How does MRI Work", "Clinical Cardiac MRI", & "Clinical MR Imaging", etc.); MRI in Practice (Roth & Westbrook), MRI from Picture to Proton, etc. Well, you get the point. I've had the opportunity to read and evaluate these texts for their strengths and weakness. In addition, I read the pertinent information related to new imaging techniques from our GE MR450W Manual. In all honesty, "Totally Accessible MRI" is THE book to read for the best understanding of MRI. Aside from reading the manual for our specific MRI unit, the rest of the books/modules were a waste of time.

All that being said, I found "Totally Accessible MRI" to be the ultimate study reference. Many of the others were either too simplistic ("How Does MRI Work"), irrelevant to the registry ("Clinical Cardiac MRI"), directed more for radiologists or nerds like myself ("Clinical MR Imaging - where 100+ pages related to MR physics, the other 700 pages being about pathology, diagnosis, & analysis [excellent book nonetheless]). Time and time again I found myself coming right back to "Totally Accessible MRI" for an understanding of what the other failed to articulate.

I am being completely honest when I say you could purchase this book alone and easily pass the registry. You could argue that I gained an understanding of MRI from all the references listed above, but the truth is they either bored me to death or skimmed over the essentials. Mr. Lipton was not afraid to incorporate a tiny bit of quantum physics in his first chapter ... but DON'T let that deter you from this book as it is minimal (a paragraph or two) and ONLY the content all the other books were too afraid to include because of the instinctual fear of this subject.

The only complaint I have about this book is the binding. The paperback version came unglued at the binding and many of the pages are now loose. I don't know if they make a hardcover version (please consider this option Springer/Mr. Lipton), but that would be the only thing I would change if I had to start all over again in my quest for a complete understanding of MRI.

This self-defensively "postmodern" guide provides 226 essay-length overviews of critics, schools, movements, and national and ethnic groups important to the study of literary theory and criticism. The descriptive entries, which include a primary and secondary bibliography and an abundance of cross references that facilitate exploration, are authoritative and well written. The entries in Hugh Holman's Handbook to Literature (Macmillan, 1992. 6th ed.) are both much shorter and more accessible, but individual critics are not included. Magill's Critical Survey of Poetry (Salem Pr., 1992. rev. ed.), on the other hand, gives critical analyses of poets but deals only briefly with terms and concepts. By covering terms and critics, this guide does the work of both sources, filling a niche for scholars and graduate students in literature and related fields.

With coverage ranging from Plato and Aristotle to Richard Rorty and Edward Said, this work is an overview of major landmarks of criticism from classical antiquity to the present day. Included, in addition to literary critics, are theorists whose affiliation or discipline is not primarily literary studies: philosophers, political theorists, anthropologists, psychologists, and psychiatrists. For example, an essay on Hegel appears between those on Hazlitt and Heidegger. The editors state that they shortened the entries on twentieth-century critics in an effort to entice the reader into making selective sorties into earlier entries, earlier in the historical sense. In addition to those figures who have affected literary theory and criticism, the work includes important groups, schools, and movements; major national or ethnic schools of criticism; and theoretical innovations of specific countries and historical periods. The 226 entries are arranged alphabetically so that such entries as Caribbean Theory and Criticism, Chicago Critics, Chinese Theory and Criticism, and Chomsky, Noam appear in that order. Entries on Arabic, African, biblical, feminist, gay, Indian, psychoanalytic, and Russian criticism are joined by essays on film theory, cultural studies, hermeneutics, postmodernism, and stylistics.

Each contribution is signed. The authors are literary scholars from leading universities throughout the U.S. and Canada with a few from institutions in other countries. Each entry is followed by at least one bibliography; most have two, a primary and a secondary one. Ample cross-references are noted within entries in small-capital letters. Related references appear at the end of each entry. Quotations are signaled by parenthetical page numbers that refer to works in the bibliographies. The appended material includes a list of contributors with academic affiliations, an index of names, and an index of topics.

Histories and anthologies of literary theory and criticism abound, but there are few encyclopedic works that treat critics, schools, and movements in a reference format. This more scholarly work complements Gale's Contemporary Literary Critics, which gives biobibliographic information about modern critics but treats no schools or movements. Another recent work, the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory: Approaches, Scholars, Terms (Univ. of Toronto, 1993), also emphasizes contemporary themes. The Johns Hopkins Guide is an excellent overview with a wider time frame. Academic libraries with strong literature programs, especially graduate programs, will want to own it.

Not for the Beginning Student

I own the first edition of this book, and wouldn't be without it as I pursue my deepening interest in theory and criticism. It covers the very broad range of topics and disciplines that comprise and contribute to this field in short but in-depth essays rather than brief "encyclopedic" entries. I will note that these essays are generally aimed at the specialist who is already acquainted with basic facts and issues pertaining to a topic, and the entries are therefore often beyond the range of what the beginning student will be looking for in his/her novice explorations (and for which other references should be consulted).

As an example of how substantial and "chewy" these essays can be, I'll quote from the entry on the Frankfurt School (written for the first edition by Vincent P. Pecora, who begins a discussion of "five motifs running through critical theory" in this way):

"(The first motif) was the reinterpretation of Marxian social science in light of the growing discrepancies between dialectical materialism as theory and as practice. This meant the rejection of any simple totalization of history, of more mechanical relations of reflection between cultural superstructure and economic base, and of the proletariat as the necessary subject-object of historical progress (see especially the early Horkheimer and Pollock here). While class struggle was never denied, it lost its place of centrality amid the larger pressures of monopolization and rationalization. Such a perspective also entailed arguments, such as those between Pollock and Neumann in the 1940s, over the specific relation of capitalism to Nazism..."

This excerpt doesn't reflect either a general writing style or opacity of content for the Guide as a whole, but it's a fair sample of what the editorial approach elicits: The aim is not only (and sometimes not at all) to provide a basic or "entry-to-topic" level of information, but to present short, expert essays by specialists on those topics--and in many cases, all but the most well-informed reader may strain to follow discussions that presume a sophisticated level of prior acquaintance and knowledge.

I'll also note that non-expert users of this reference should almost always find valuable background, context, and information on significant issues and controversies related to the individual critics, movements, epochs, and topics discussed. But such users will probably also want to have access to more basic guides and introductions to terms and topics as they explore the Hopkins essays.

As one other reviewer notes, this is a reference that will reward its owner for many years, and that thought is borne out by the fact that 10 years elapsed between the first and second editions--an indication of the Guide's scholarly approach and intended shelf life among its academic users.
