Excellent book

Recently, I read 3-4 books on children of narcissistic or self-absorbed parents. Each one was valuable in its own way, helping me untangle my thoughts and feelings.

What I like about this book, in particular, is that is reveals the systematic nature of emotionally immature thinking, which underlies the behavior of parents, lovers, friends, and public figures. By revealing the pattern and then explaining the cause (self-protection), it allows the reader to depersonalize the behavior and the damage it has done.

For the first time, I can feel "It wasn't me. It was never me. And, it's still not me." And, for the first time, I truly understand that it's a fools errand to try to make someone more emotionally mature. It's their path. I need to accept them as they are and decide how I want them in my life, if at all.

Lastly, this book is very good for people whose parents weren't excessively narcissistic, who weren't controlling or grandiose in an exaggerated fashion. One's parents can be stable and kind but still deny a deep connection with their children because they can't tolerate negative feelings. This book reveals these more subtle dynamics while explaining that the fallout is anything but subtle to a child's emotional development.

Applause for Lindsay Gibson...

Thank you Lindsay for being born!!! I've read countless self help books by various authors over the last three decades but, still, I never got to the heart of what was causing within me a pervasive sense of sadness, loneliness and not belonging. I've lived life mostly on the outside and in a detached way. Seldom did I feel that I fully connected with others. People would say I was a very likable person but I couldn't understand why. I never knew that I was attractive until a friend told me when I was in my teens. Even then I thought why is she saying that? I often took a backseat because I didn't have the confidence to stand up and be noticed. I could give countless examples going way back to my early childhood but suffice to say that Lindsay's book is the story of my live.

I'm an internalizer. My sister is and externalizer. In many ways my parents weren't mature enough to deal with my sister's temper tantrums and her destructiveness. I was always on the receiving end of my sister's evil doings but my parents blamed me for her s. They would give in to her all the time and at my expense. They had no control of her. My sister and mother were always together and my father adored my sister whilst, I was the pregnancy they didn't want. Yes, my mother told me that she tried to abort me during the first five months of her pregnancy, but in her words said, I couldn't get rid of you! So, she said, you were born and we were stuck with you like it or not. I was about seven years old at the time and didn't fully understand then what she was saying until I grew older.

Mother's jealousy, envy and resentment towards me were not recognized at the time but, on reflection, I now realize how damaging it was. I reflect back to when I was 15 and the only emotion that I recall was a deep sense of loneliness which I have carried with me since. Who am I? Where do I fit in? Why do I feel flawed as a human being? Why do I not feel good enough? Never ending questions. In my loneliness I felt an ever ending sorrow that I couldn't comprehend that, is, until I read Lindsay's book. I've lived most of my life with a multitude of conflicting and confusing emotions that neither I or any therapist I've seen or other books I've read has touch the spot quite like, 'Emotionally Immature Parents'. The decades have gone by and I'm now 65... at last I understand the emotional damage done throughout my early childhood and the life long affect it has had on me. However, all the could have's, would have's and should have's won't change a thing but, there's one thing for sure and that is, for the rest of my days I'll have clarity and an inner peace that I've never had. My heart is lighter and the anger all spent... what a wonderful place to be! Thank you from the bottom of my heart Lindsay. You are and angel in disguise.

If you weren't badly "abused," but still didn't feel like your family really embraced you, this is the book for you.

There are a few negative reviews that accuse the book of being judgmental and fostering dangerous, exaggerated attitudes toward parents. I actually didn't see that at all. This book gives a name to the subtle disengagement, distance and neglect kids suffer at the hands of parents who probably do a great job of providing food, clothing, shelter and physical safety.

I burst into tears reading the chapters on internalizers and how they end up dealing with this; it was like reading my life story. I'm not sure my parents were bad enough to be considered true "narcissists," and I really do believe they love me. But they fall so clearly into the "emotional parent" (my Mom) and "passive parent" (my Dad) the author describes, and it was a disastrous combo for my sense of worth. It explained their behavior right down to exact words and phrases they use, and it also explained MY behavior and some of the self-sabotaging choices I've made as an adult. I was so relieved to hear it wasn't all in my head, that there were things I could do to find real emotional connection with other people, even in my 40s!

I didn't come away judging my folks, but rather with new insight on how to deal with them, and how not to waste another minute of my life trying to get through to family members who have no desire to change. I'll take my parents as they are and not expect more than they can give, but also begin holding myself accountable for good choices now that I have this new information with which to move forward. I'm so thankful I found this book- it was dead on in its specificity.

OK for experienced programmers new to C#

Update (4/6/2003): I feel it's important to modify my rating and approval of the book relative to some of the additional texts I've since read. I also applied an edit to correct a misunderstanding on my part and added some additional material. I still agree with most of my original thoughts on the book, but feel the book isn't thorough enough to be called "Mastering." I've since discovered the Applications Development in .Net books by Robert Oberg and crew (they have a very nice line of introductory and intermediate/advanced texts for both C# and VB.Net from Prentice Hall), and feel these books are superior in explaining the languages and their overall context in the .Net world. They also have somewhat more useful examples. The Price and Gunderloy book is still decent, and I still hold by my audience recommendations, but I feel an overall score of 2.5 to 3 stars is more appropriate.

This book is reasonably well written and easy to read. It's a decent overview of both the C# language and .Net, so it's a good first book for programmers trying to understand these new technologies, but I'm not so sure I would recommend it to pure programming beginners.
As one review stated there are cases where some important concepts are not as thoroughly covered as they could be. There are also some inconsistencies and small lapses that shouldn't hurt experienced programmers, but may confuse novices. An example is the case where they discuss the difference between using the 'override' and 'new' keywords with methods; they give a good general explanation, but mention that there are exceptions. They do not, however, identify the exceptions, and this may leave more curious and experienced developers hanging. The code examples in the book are useful, but as another reviewer stated, they are often reprinted at the end of the section which results in a lot of redundant pages where additional examples would have been more welcome.
The tradeoff for the surface skimming approach is that the book's pace, for the right audience, is swift. Experienced developers, and especially JAVA or C coders, will rip through the first third of the book and get a good basic understanding of the C# syntax. The authors don't compare JAVA and C# in the way Bruce Eckels does with C++ and JAVA in his Thinking in JAVA text, which would have been a useful approach for JAVA developers, but their approach leaves the book a bit more accessible.
I was also pleased that with few exceptions the examples all compiled and ran. I've worked with some books where there were errors in the examples and this made active learning more troublesome. The exception is that in defining database access in some of the last chapters, I had to do a little more tinkering to get access rights to the SQL Server database working. I think the book would be better if it skipped the chapter on SQL and expanded the ADO.NET chapter to include security/signon and setup issues with databases with .Net objects.
It is true that the chapters in the middle and last thirds of the book probably don't also contain as much detail as those experienced in .Net and ASP might prefer, but again, the collective approach of the book gives the experienced developer new to .Net and C# a quick trip through the languange and how it integrates with .Net. One problem it has in common with a lot of programming books is that the examples are a little too simple. You will know how to build a Web service in C# with VS.Net when you are done with this book, but it won't do much and the intricacies of distributed computing aren't really deeply discussed.

Unquestionably a good first C# book

If you are familiar with OOP/C++/Java and want to pick up main C# concepts in a hurry, get this book. Although I did read Tom Archer's "Inside C#" before this one, and some tutorials on the net, I think this book deserves to be the first C# book for a beginner or an intermediate programmer. It has a decent aggregation & coherent explanantions of all the major C# topics and uses Visual Studio.NET IDE in its examples (which I think is really important for a C# book). One minor drawback is that some important topics(like Web Services and .NET Remoting) are given just a cursory treatment. But I guess, such vast topics merit devoted books just for those. Beware however, I came across 2 critical bugs - Ch 12, first page it says method signature is composed of method name,return type and parameter list (actually its just the parameter list and method name) and on page 794, chapter on ADO.NET it says to use Fill method on DataSet object to synchronize changes made to the DataSet with Database(in reality you should use Update method). It even gives an introduction to ASP.NET and ADO.NET but you have to look for other sources to learn those technologies well.

Overall, its a good book to invest your money and time in.

About the Author
Marga Hogenboom, M.D., lives and works at the Camphill Rudolf Steiner schools near Aberdeen and is a director of the Camphill Medical Practice.

Bob Woodward has been active in the healing profession, living with and educating children with special educational needs for more than thirty years. He is a member of the Bristol District Association of Healers and also of the World Federation of Healing. He lives with his wife, three sons, and two daughters at the Sheiling School Camphill Community in Thornbury, near Bristol. He is also the author of Autism: A Holistic Approach (2000) and Spirit Healing (2004).

About the Author
Fred Meier s career spans more than 50 years as a control systems engineer, chief engineer, and engineering manager in the oil, chemical and engineering industries in the United States, Algeria, Canada, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom. He has held Professional Engineer licenses in New York, New Jersey, California, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. He completed U.S. Army training as an electrical engineer and has a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and an MBA from Rutgers University. Fred has been an ISA member for more than 40 years. He has served as President of the New York Section; the Edmonton, Alberta, Section; and the Tar Heel (North Carolina) Capital Area Section. He was awarded the ISA District II Golden Eagle Award in 2000 and ISA s Golden Achievement Award in 2005. Fred presented two papers at ISA 1982, Why Not Be an Adaptive Manager? and, jointly with coworker Trevor Haines, Contractor Handling of Engineering for Distributed Control Systems . He authored the cover article for CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, Feb. 22, 1982, Is your control system ready to start up? Fred and son Cliff (this book s co-author) presented a joint paper at ISA 1999, A Standard P&ID, elusive as the Scarlet Pimpernel . Fred also published an editorial viewpoint in ISA TRANSACTIONS, October 2002, A P&ID standard: What, Why, How? . This book won the Raymond D. Molloy and the Thomas G. Fisher Awards in 2004. After Fred s first retirement, he served as the ISA Staff Engineer; after his second retirement, as an ISA Instructor and Consultant; and, since his third retirement, as co-author of this book. Fred and Jean have been married for 62 years and are the proud parents of four children, four grandchildren, and two great granddaughters, all scattered across the United States and Canada. They currently live in Carolina Meadows, a retirement community near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Cliff Meier s engineering experience started back in the 70s with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University. His attraction to the widgets and intricacies of Instrumentation and Controls has taken him to three continents and involvement in nuclear and fossil fuel power generation, oil and gas production, chemical, pulp and paper processes, microelectronics factories and even wastewater treatment. Cliff has worked on projects ranging in complexity from a few control diagrams to complex modernization projects and green-field installations entailing thousands of loops and hundreds of schematics. His career started with manual drafting on Mylar sheets and has transitioned to computer-aided design (CAD) where efficient data handling has almost eclipsed the importance of the physical drawings. While he enjoys the team relationships of design projects, he finds construction, commissioning and teamwork with skilled maintenance technicians, especially the ones with fists of ham, to be almost as rewarding as writing with his Dad. Cliff is a member of ISA and holds a professional engineering license for Control Systems in Oregon. He and his wife, Cris, have been married more than 32 years and are the parents of the two finest kids on earth - Will and Helen. They live in Beaverton, Oregon, where they can gaze at snow-capped mountains when it isn t raining, which, come to think of it, is not that often.

Great reference from student to professional level, easy read.

Liked logical sequence of content that leads reader clearly through 8 fully explained steps from process flow through loop diagrams.
Authors broad experience in multiple fields provides meaningful insight as to why P&IDs tend to look the same but differ according to company policy and professional preferance, issues that tend to complicate contractor, professional, and vendor communities.
This is an easy read for a somewhat complicated subject, most professional publications tend to overemphasize the minucia, this book treats the concepts with a very practical and sometimes humerous pen.

Clear explanations

This book is a very nice and concise way to describe ISA 5.1. I've used it to clarify some decisions when I redline P&IDs for midstream gas processing facilities. I would still recommend that the reader acquire ISA 5.1 for reference. Another good standard would be ISA 5.4 "Instrument Loop Diagrams".

About the Author
Christopher James is an internationally known artist and photographer whose photographs, paintings, and alternative process printmaking have been exhibited in galleries and museums in this country and abroad. His work has been published and shown extensively, including exhibitions in The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The George Eastman House, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The first two editions of his book, The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes have received international critical acclaim and are universally recognized by artists, curators, historians, and educators as the definitive texts in the genre of alternative process photography and photographically integrated media and culture. Christopher, after 13 years at Harvard University, is presently University Professor and Director of the MFA in Photography program at The College of Art and Design - Lesley University. An historical accomplishment

First an up front, some of my work is mentioned here, and I did work with Christopher on some aspects of the book, but sheese, I never expected this, one might consider this a defensive weapon in more ways than one!

Books on photographic processes abound, history is full of them, some are good, some are bad, but only a few become landmark works. and this is one of them. Historically I can only think of Hasluck's "Book of Photography, Practical, Theoretic and Applied" 1905, with 700 pages and 900 illustrations, as anything coming close.

I want to credit Christopher for putting each of these processes in their historical context. He has done that in each chapter, and when possible, he has added images made by the process being described in that chapter. Bravo! We are rapidly losing our connection to the history of photography. I have next to me, Beaumont Newhall's horrid "History of Photography." Neither the gum print, oil print, or Bromoil print, among many other major processes used by photographic artists, is listed in the index, or described in the text. Somehow Mr. Newhall thought that the process was irrelevant to the image. That lleads one to suspect he never made a hand coated image in his life.

Photographic history from the bottom up is something sorely lacking in the contemporary oeuvre of photographic history. As I have said in the flyleaf blurb, this is a book that goes beyond being a darkroom guide. In a strong sense, this book is also a standalone work in photographic history. It is a useful reference for anyone professionally involved in photography.

If you really want to be a photographer, (doing selfies on a cell phone does not really qualify you,) buy this book.Read it. Of course not in one sitting. You are allowed to skim through it and enjoy the images. Read the "A Little History" intro's. This will take a few sittings, a six pack or two, but at the end, you will know more photographic history than most teachers of photography. You will have shook hands with your forbears. You will connect to the women and men who developed these processes, and exploited them to make the great art legacy of the past. Silver gelatin enlarging was a major part of photography, however as an art form, many other processes were involved. Process often determines the art, yeah, I know, your teacher said that wasn't true, but if she did, she never made a gum print, that's for sure.

Every serious photographer I know has a library of photography books. It may be it a roomful, or just a shelf. Any collection missing this book will appear quite naked.

Must. Have.

Staggering!

First, this is the last time you will be likely to see this book as a single volume. It's already like carrying around an unabridged dictionary. Unwieldy, yet irresistible, the next edition will be forced into two volumes (maybe three!).
I waited months to get my hands on this. It was worth the wait. Extremely well-written and entertaining too, there is no doubt this is now the gold standard for what is currently called "alternative photography", but will no doubt be called something else in the near future. After all, silver based photography is in fact already an "alternative" to digital. And digital photography is now providing some of the tools needed to practice alternative techniques in greater depth.
The great yellow father caused the brakes to be put on most of these "alternative" processes many years ago, and halted progress by amateurs via their repugnant secret keeping. I'm hoping that this book, and others like it, in addition to renewed interest in silver and a desire not to allow just one approach to take over again, will lead to renewed research and experimentation by photographers of all levels. If new and better processes don't result from the publication of this book, I will be very surprised.
