He has served as instructor of tax-advantaged investments at the NY Institute of Finance, instructor of business law at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and adjunct professor at George Mason University. He has also served as executive editor for Tax Analysts and managing editor for CCH's Business Strategies Guide. Mr. Windish is the author of Tax Advantage Investments and Investor's Guide to Limited Partnerships, both published by the New York Institute of Finance. About the Author

At Disney he also served as Head of Special Effects Units for the Disney features Kingdom of the Sun and Tarzan, and was Special Effects Animator on such notable titles as Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, James and the Giant Peach, Hercules and Mulan. He served as Designer and Supervisor for all 2D and 3D visual effects on the television series Silverwing, and Chaotic at Bardel Animation in Vancouver. He has also designed and directed a wide variety of television commercials. Clients include General Motors, CocaCola, Honda, MacDonald's, Gillette, Players Tobacco, Larrouse Dictionaries, and Radio Quebec. For almost three years, he was the Head of animation, and Digital Character animation at the Vancouver Film School. He lectures at animation schools in Canada, Europe and Asia, and has conducted workshops at animation festivals and schools around the world. he is a professional musician and performer as well. I've been hoping for years that someone would write a comprehensive book on 2D effects animation. Something more than the little "how to draw and flapping flag" or "how to make a fire cycle" bits that get tacked on in other animation books.

Disney veteran Joseph Gilland has finally given us that first book dedicated to 2D effects animation. He's broken down effects into four broad categories (water/liquids, fire/smoke, props/solid objects and magical effects) and laid out the principles needed to bring them to life on paper.

Since every real-world splash and flame is unique, Elemental Magic isn't so much of a "how to draw" type book as it is a "how to approach" book. Gilland breaks down the basic behaviors of different types of matter and the working methods needed for an animator to capture the dynamic essence of an effect without being tied to a hyper-real style or getting bogged down in an unmanageable level of detail.

And this book doesn't solely apply to hand-drawn effects. Each section on a type of matter includes several pages on how to apply these classical animation principles to digital effects work. How to get the most out the computer's ability to do the heavy lifting on effects.

Hopefully this isn't the last book ever published on 2D effects animation. Gilland himself mentions that he's only scratching the surface with this book and that water, smoke or any other element could warrant a full volume treatment.

I hope someone takes him up on that offer, and with Elemental Magic we now have a solid foundation to build on.

What Belies This Cover? Elemental Magic--A Critical Review

If the old adage, "Never judge a book by its cover," holds true, then Elemental Magic certainly reinforces this notion. If there's any concern, it's that the wonders of this book may be passed up because of this nondescript cover layout. I also feel the author could have come up with a more intriguing sub-title.

When I first opened this soft cover, rectangular book, and I thought "OMG!" Inside, this book looks like an illustrator's private sketch book. Hundreds of beautifully hand-drawn, colored sketches: some segregated from the text, others used as a background (watermarked) with the text overlaid.

Next to each illustration is a brief, but thorough explanation of the process. And, the key to understanding this message is summed up in one word: energy.

Joseph Gilland, the author, is a 30-year animator and has worked on some of the biggest animation features over the past 20+ years including Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, Pocohantas and a few others. Some of the sketches that became film cells are reproduced with his notes below the art!

The book is outline with two (2) brief chapters before he introduces the philosophy of animation: The Preface and The History of Classical Animation. The remainder of the book gives step by step analysis not of how to sketch a flame or construct an iceberg, for instance, but of the techniques of how to get in touch with what he refers to as the "energy of the elements." How does one capture the essence of a burning flame? Shattered glass? A wisp of smoke or the pixie dust floating through gust of wind? There is a way to see it, Gilland explains, and it is connecting to the unique movement ("energy") of that natural (i.e., fire, water, rocks, lava, smoke, flame, glass, frost, liquids, etc.) element.

I've been a fine artist and an illustrator for more than 30 years and more recently a graphic artist. Over the years, I've collected many books by celebrated artist, but this is the first by a Western artist that stresses the spiritual dimension of the subject in order to identify with its characteristics. His words and explanations are quite refreshing. I found myself thinking, "How come I hadn't figure that out!"

One of a kind

Joseph Gilland has done a great service by creating this book, which intricately details both the thought process and raw mechanics behind traditional, hand-drawn effects animation - a discipline that rarely takes center stage in a character-oriented animation industry. I've been looking for a resource like this for years, and there really hasn't been anything like it before this book. I can whole-heartedly recommend it for any animator with an interest in broadening their understanding of effects, the drawings contained within are worth the price alone.

Based on the sira, the eighth- and ninth-century Arabic biographies that recount numerous events in the Prophet’s life, it contains original English translations of many important passages that reveal the words of men and women who heard Muhammad speak and witnessed the events of his life.

Scrupulous and exhaustive in its fidelity to its sources, Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is presented in a narrative style that is easily comprehensible, yet authentic and inspiring in its use of language, reflecting both the simplicity and grandeur of the story it tells. The book has been published in twelve languages and has received numerous awards, including acknowledgment as best biography of the Prophet in English at the National Seerat Conference in Islamabad. This revised edition, which represents the final updates made to the text before the author’s death in 2005, incorporates important additions about the Prophet’s expanding influence and his spreading of the message of Islam into Syria and its neighboring states.

Martin Lings (1909-2005) was a renowned British scholar with degrees in English and Arabic from London University and Oxford University. At Oxford, he studied English under C. S. Lewis, who later became a close friend. Lings taught at several European universities and the University of Cairo and served as the keeper of Oriental manuscripts for the British Museum and the British Library. His friendship and similar beliefs with philosophers Ren� Gu�non and Frithjof Schuon inspired Lings to convert to Islam. He went on to become an influential member of Western Muslim society, participating in several international Islamic councils and conferences, including acting as consultant to the World of Islam Festival Trust. He is the author of twelve books on religion and spirituality.

Great but uncritical

Very well written and useful for understanding Muhammad and the Koran. But be aware that Lings was an enthusiastic convert to Islam and accepted the orthodox islamic views on the prophet and the book. No critical questions, but deep knowledge of Arabic and islamic traditions.

Originally, I checked this book out from a community college I was attending at the time. It is a great book and very enlightening on the life of Muhammad. I repurchased this same book from Amazon because I loved/love it so much. This book is a great addition to any believer whether he/she be Hindu, Christian, Jew, and anyone who believes in the one God.

If you are looking for a book with revolutionary concepts leave it but if you are looking for a sort of drums encyclopedia ..O'Mahoney did it for you! Almost every aspect of the drumming has covered, maybe not in depht ( the title tells no lies) but each lesson is a very good start point with very useful introduction ( I appreciated it a lot). Being O'Mahoney a jazz drummer the jazz section seems to be the most accurate but I think every drummer could appreciate it (Blast Beats ? Three lessons!). The CD contains 318 (!!) tracks including play along. I love this book.

An outstanding overview of drumset playing styles

This book gives you an terrific overview of drumset styles and how they fit with different genres of music. The author explains the essence of each style & genre, and then shows beginning, intermediate, and advanced examples of how to play in that style. He also uses a plain English approach to explaining about playing ahead or behind the beat, how to construct your own drum parts, soloing, etc. This is a book you'll come back to often as you take the journey of playing drumset. It is not meant to be a tour of cutting edge interpretations of styles, but rather a great overview of what makes different music genres sound the way they do -- and how drums support that genre. Very useful.

The best drum book for any drummer. This book contains thorough descriptions of styles, well defined musical terminology and covers many topics within the drumming realm including many new innovative techniques (Blast beats etc) all packaged in one wonderful compendium. A "must have" for any drummer's collection-one of the best new books out there. This book was a lucky "find' for me as I had never heard of it and when I saw the copyright, I learned that is had just come out on the market in 2014. I would highly recommend this book above many books on the market because it is so wholly comprehensive.

Classic History of the French Revolution

While the translator's conceit that Lenin used this book for a blueprint for his revolution is difficult to believe, this is a classic history of the French Revolution by a famous 19th century French historian.

At first I found him hard to take. A typical argument goes like this: first there's 20 pages or so on the skill and virtuousness of the French army officers. Then there's accounts of the many massacres of the officers by their own men after the Revolution. Then there's another 20 pages on the depravity and baseness of the French army soldiers.

However, if you read between the lines a bit, you do learn a lot about why the officers were massacred. The officers had custody of all the money the government paid for the company, which they used to live lives of luxury, while their men were often not given enough food to live on. And the men had no chance of advancement. To the author's credit he does write about the legitimate grievances of the soldiers.

The author's goal, as he explains in the third volume, is to study the French revolutionaries in an objective manner, as if they were a strange new animal. Of course, he is unsuccessful in being objective, but his prejudices are so 19th century, and so transparent to us, with our much different prejudices, that he is ultimately successful in giving us an greater understanding of the people and events that determined the world's politics for centuries to come.

I think the writer could have writen more about the religious influences and background to the revolutions e.g. the dramatic role that the pope and Catholics and Protestants played in this regard.
He portrait the happenings as if it was only between the haves and haves-not.
