Larry Wall wrote Perl and he wrote Programming Perl. Better yet, he writes amusingly and well--all of which comes across in this latest edition of the definitive guide to the language.

Like Topsy, Perl just grew, and as a result the need for a third edition came about. It's now over 1,000 pages, which it needs to be, as it performs several different duties. First, it's an introduction to the Perl language for those who are new to programming; also, it's a guide for those who are coming from other languages; and, finally, it's a Perl language reference.

Among Larry Wall's other pursuits is being a linguist, and it's perhaps for this reason that Perl is a peculiarly flexible language with many routes to achieving the same ends, as the authors ably demonstrate. It's also extensible in several ways, designed to work with many other languages. Also, as it's largely interpreted, programs written in Perl tend to run unmodified on a variety of platforms--although platform-specific Perl modules and programming practices are also discussed.

A major strength of Programming Perl is the way subject areas are approached from several directions. This constant shift of viewpoint eliminates blind spots in the reader's understanding and provides a pleasing echo of the way Perl itself can take many routes from here to there.

About the Author

Larry Wall originally created Perl while a programmer at Unisys. He now works full time guiding the future development of the language as a researcher and developer at O'Reilly & Associates. Larry is known for his idiosyncratic and thought-provoking approach to programming, as well as for his groundbreaking contributions to the culture of free software programming. He is the principal author of the bestselling Programming Perl, known colloquially as "the Camel book."

Tom Christiansen is a freelance consultant specializing in Perl training and writing. After working for several years for TSR Hobbies (of Dungeons and Dragons fame), he set off for college where he spent a year in Spain and five in America, dabbling in music, linguistics, programming, and some half-dozen different spoken languages. Tom finally escaped UW-Madison with B.A.s in Spanish and computer science and an M.S. in computer science. He then spent five years at Convex as a jack-of-all-trades working on everything from system administration to utility and kernel development, with customer support and training thrown in for good measure. Tom also served two terms on the USENIX Association Board of directors. With over fifteen years' experience in UNIX system administration and programming, Tom presents seminars internationally. Living in the foothills above Boulder, Colorado, surrounded by mule deer, skunks, and the occasional mountain lion and black bear, Tom takes summers off for hiking, hacking, birding, music making, and gaming.

Watchout for the the Regular Expressions chapter though -- it seems like it goes forever

Warning! This book is very informative! They weren't lying, I am in the Threads chapter of this book now, and though dates, it gives me the historical mindset of the late 90's with detailed information about every fundamental aspect of Perl -- this book goes deep... Watchout for the the Regular Expressions chapter though -- it seems like it goes forever, but in the end, it's rewarding to type out a Perl example with a RegEx and have a better understanding on what's going on... I'm going to read the more current versions of this book later --- it's worth the struggle...

Is This a Reference, a Tutorial, or Not Quite Enough of Either?

I always like the Camel book but this book was mysterious in that
it gave TOO much info on many subjects and verged into being a
tutorial rather than a reference and often did not quite succeed at
being either. It's neither fish nor fowl.

Why 100+ pages on regular expressions given the excellence and
thoroughness of Friedl's book "Mastering Regular Expressions"?
Why data structures section given that this strays into the Cookbook's
domain but doesn't really go quite far enough to be a complete tutorial.

Other very, very important topics where the O'Reilly books are way, way
out of date (like the DBI book) aren't made up for by the Camel book.
Indeed, databases are scarcely mentioned much less covered. The
book also falls short by virtually not mentioning crucial directory-related
operations like recursive descent with FIle::Find. This subject is of vital
interest to sysadmins and QAs using Perl to make product build scripts
where movement around directories is at a premium.

This Camel is okay but, alas, like so many latter-day O'Reilly products,
it just doesn't measure up to its predecessors.

A book about the DBI, not programming databases from Perl.

This is a good book, IF:
- You want the online documentation with some extra fluff on databases, extra examples and the DBI spec. in one handy place (pages 187 - 333 are pretty much available online, the rest of the book is the online material filled out).
- You are interested in learning about the DBI, the book is about the DBI rather than database programming.
This is not a good book, IF:
- You want to learn how to program databases from the web (the widest application of Perl today is covered on one example/page and is an absolute joke).
- You want to learn how to program databases other than Oracle (the massive Windows market, and other markets are left to you, the reader, to extrapolate techniques from the book to practice).

This is a terrible book, IF:
- You are a Perl/programming beginner.
- You want to learn about databases.
- You want to troubleshoot your application (to not include much more driver specific material, when the DBI relies so heavily on the database's driver, means that essentially the book's use is very limited in the real world).
The DBI is a great tool in the Perl armoury; this book does not do it justice. You will learn more from the online documentation, DBI mailing list and the very generous Perl community than you could ever get from here - save your money (The forthcoming 'Web Databases with Perl' from Manning looks far more promising, but it's not out until Oct 2000).
Of course, if the book is supposed to be nothing more than a guide to the DBI in the very limited scope of being a recycle and slight expansion of existing material, then you can't fault it, and it is a nice read. A lot of the reviews for the book reflect this sentiment. However, if you are after more, you will end up questioning what O'Reilly were thinking. On these grounds three stars is generous.

Vendelin, Pavio & Rohde -- Accept no substitutes!

We used this book as well as Dr. Maas's in grad school. I own both, but through the years this is the more well-thumbed of the two.

I think this volume is more oriented toward the circuit designer, while Maas is aimed more toward underlying engineering analysis... but who really needs to worry about arcane non-linear analysis, e.g. Volterra series analysis these days, anyhow?

I'd get both if you can, but if not this is *the one*.

About the Author

J. C. Das is a Staff Consultant on Electrical Power Systems with AMEC Inc., in Tucker, Georgia. He is Life Fellow of IEEE (UK), Fellow of IET (India), and has authored approximately sixty technical papers and published 190 study reports of real-world power systems. He is the author of two other books, Power System Analysis: Short-Circuit Load Flow and Harmonics, Second Edition, and Transients in Electrical Systems: Analysis, Recognition, and Mitigation. He is a registered P.E. in the states of Georgia and Oklahoma, C.Eng. in UK, and Eur Ing in Europe. J. C. Das is also a member of CIGRE, Federation of European Engineers, and other technical associations and organizations.

You will be short-changed

Presumably the reason why somebody would want to buy this book is to learn more about arc flash. Well, to be brief, you're not going to! This book is a real ripoff. It's a long enough book, but there's just not enough on this topic, and the rest is filler. Short circuit calculations, protective relaying, insulation coordination, etc. etc. are all important and useful EE topics, but they are not arc flash hazard or arc flash PPE. The book is some 614 pages long. One 39-page long chapter deals with arc flash hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) gets no chapter at all and is not even listed in the index in any context. The rest of the book is EE information you can pick up from dozens of good textbooks. What was the publisher thinking about in publishing this book??

If you need to have information on arc flash hazards or PPE for arc flash safety purposes, buy yourself a copy of NFPA 70E or IEEE 1584 standards. Both these books actually have information you need and can use. Das's book does not; it's pathetic.

The author writes well and is knowledgeable, so why the publishers did not make him stick to the topic is incomprehensible. One answer, of course, is that the situation with regards to technical editors at the publishing houses is often not good. There's a flood of proposed book topics, and the assigned editors all too often lack the technical expertise to judge the goodness of the submission. What's even worse (as I can attest from my experience in other cases), is that the editor will send out the proposed manuscript to outside reviewers, get very negative feedback, ignore it, and just publish what they should not have published.

Premier Arc Flash analysis and mitigation refrence Book.

This book is one of its kinds and there is no other parallel book in the market. I have found it very useful to understand arc flash hazard, a subject much confused in the recent times.

The book provides practical ideas of limiting the arc flash hazard with innovations in system designs and protections and speaks of the immense experience of the author on this subject.

Being heavily involved in industrial power distribution systems, I found it a state of the art book, with many case studies and calculations of arc flash hazard in a number of practical system configurations. The refrence had very useful data, discussions and technical information on the innovations going on in the industry, like zone interlocking, coordination of protective devices instantaneous basis, microprocessor based technologies applied to protective relays, arc flash detection systems and the like.

The chapters on arc flash hazard calculations on dc systems is interesting--I believe there is no equivalent research work done in this aspect and also the last chapter 16 on application of Ethernet and IEC 61850 communications for pooling the vast data.

I agree with the comments of Lanny Floyd, Fellow of IEEE, who is nationally and internationally known expert in safety. In his Foreword to the book he writes: "J.C. Das has researched this body of knowledge and brought together innovative ideas and practical concepts with abundant references and real world case studies in arc flash analysis and mitigation.

For the first time, design engineers, facility managers, safety professionals and operating and maintenance personnel have a common comprehensive reference for prevention methods." I absolutely recommend this book to anyone engaged in arc flash hazard analyses and mitigation.

About the Author
Paul M. Kennedy is J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University. He regularly publishes in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic, and many other periodicals and scholarly journals. The author of thirteen books, he is perhaps best known for The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. His most recent publication (2006) is The Parliament of Man: The Past, Present, and Future of the United Nations.

A Disturbing Book, in Many Ways

Without taking a definite position on Mahan or geopolitics,
the book presents British naval power as a textbook example
of how an island nation became first a regional naval power
and then rose to global pre-eminence. The parts about how
the first wave of global trade interacted with the Industrial
Revolution are especially interesting.

It then goes on to describe how a mixture of politics, social
problems, and economic neglect weakened the British Navy, at
a time when newly industrialized countries like Germany,
Japan, and America were becoming stronger.

The end of the story is well known, as two Pyrrhic Victories
against Germany shattered the British Empire in the 20th century.

As an American, I find the description of how Britain in the late
1800s neglected its education system and engaged in trade policies
which destroyed the physical economy to be much too close to home.
This book can be read as a cautionary tale of what could happen to
the United States is we are not careful.

Good review of British naval sea power both it's rise and fall. Easy to understand does not read like a textbook

MISLEADING, BIASED, YET INFORMATIVE.

The title of this book, in my opinion, is misleading. I was expecting Specifications of British Naval Vessels, Research & Development in Vessel Engineering, Naval Strategy, Naval Tactics, Seamen's skill sets & equipment vis-a-vis their main opponents during periods of peace & war etc during the rise & fall of British Naval Mastery. Instead this book was about British Geopolitics & Macro-economics & the British Navy's role within that framework. As interesting as this topic is, I was disappointed because I wanted to read a different book. However, this book does a decent job in addressing what this book is really about, albeit it being biased towards Britain being some kind of Holy Nation. The Author doesn't even mention once the term "Opium War(s)" or "Concentration Camps" which the British invented during the Boer War. The Author comes across as if Britain was doing the whole World some kind of favour by expanding & consolidating her interests. Very little was mentioned that Britain was emulating Portugal's & Holland's lead, they were the real pioneers of Colonialism & International Finance. Give me a break!

I will now succinctly describe Britain's geopolitical strategy during their rise & zenith: Assuming Britain was one of the top three nations in Western Europe, if the number one nation was in conflict with the number two nation, Britain would support the number two nation. If the number two nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If the number one nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If two out of the top three nations formed an alliance & there was a conflict between them & some other nation(s), Britain would support the weaker nations. While this was going on or not, Britain would expand & consolidate her overseas Empire whilst always either developing the strongest Navy on the planet or maintaining the strongest Navy on the planet. Throw in some skewed diplomacy, an obsession with Naval Blockades & voila, you have an enormous Empire while the rest of Western Europe was too busy asleep at the wheel to realise what was going on, even though they themselves were losing colonies all around the World to Britain. If you are wondering, how did they afford all this, the answer is that they had a very small Army, constructing vessels was not as expensive as in modern times, they invented Central Banking in 1694, the public accepted fiat currency once it was introduced & no nation came even close to them in the magnitude of international trade once they got to the zenith. Pretty simple if you ask me & you probably do not need to read the book anymore.

On the positive side, this book is well written, broken up in chapters that are logical i.e. the different periods during the rise, zenith & fall of the British Empire. Some interesting tables in regards to nation comparisons, vessels, macro-economic data etc during different periods. The improving & then decline in Britain's macro-economy is also well described, discussing inflation, national debt, trade deficits/surpluses & comparisons with other nations. For the Naval Strategists out there, the Author does sprinkle Mahan & Mackinder throughout this book, however I found it superficial & it left me wanting more. The Author also gets into the pivotal agreements over a short period of time which secured American hegemony, the passing of the baton, if you wish. Thank you Mr Kennedy for your contribution in this field, even though the title of your book was misleading & you are biased.
