In Common Ground, Gary Okihiro uses the experiences of Asian Americans to reconfigure the ways in which American history can be understood. He examines a set of binaries--East and West, black and white, man and woman, heterosexual and homosexual--that have structured the telling of our nation's history and shaped our ideas of citizenship since the late nineteenth century. Okihiro not only exposes the artifice of these binaries but also offers a less rigid and more embracing set of stories on which to ground a national history. Influenced by European hierarchical thinking in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Anglo Americans increasingly categorized other newcomers to the United States. Binaries formed in the American imagination, creating a sense of coherence among white citizens during times of rapid and far-reaching social change. Within each binary, however, Asian Americans have proven disruptive: they cannot be fully described as either Eastern or Western; they challenge the racial categories of black and white; and within the gender and sexual binaries of man and woman, straight and gay, they have been repeatedly positioned as neither nor.

Okihiro analyzes how groups of people and numerous major events in American history have generally been depicted, and then offers alternative representations from an Asian-American viewpoint--one that reveals the ways in which binaries have contributed toward simplifying, excluding, and denying differences and convergences. Drawing on a rich variety of sources, from the Chicago Exposition of 1898 to The Wizard of Oz, this book is a provocative response to current debates over immigration and race, multiculturalism and globalization, and questions concerning the nature of America and its peoples. The ideal foil to conventional surveys of American history, Common Ground asks its readers to reimagine our past free of binaries and open to diversity and social justice.

Is there an "American" culture or are our supposed common experiences and assumptions merely a social construct largely created by a dominant white European elite? Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs and director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University, examines traditional fissures in American life from an Asian American perspective. Okihiro provocatively suggests that our view of nineteenth-century transcontinental expansion from East to West ignores the role of Asian immigrants moving in the opposite direction. Similarly, his portrait of the 1993 Columbian Exposition suggests it extolled the advance of white civilization, viewed African civilization as barbaric, and virtually ignored the role of East Asian civilizations in forming American "character." Common Ground, Uncommon History Text

Usually I find it very hard to find a captivating history textbook, especially one on American History. When my U.S. History professor required us to read from this text, I definitely had my doubts on being able to sit and focus on reading it. I quickly came to the realization that this book was by far more engaging and imaginative in terms of painting social inequalities than any of the other books I was required to read for the same course. Even though we weren't required to read the entire book, it was written so well that I actually could not put it down! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the connections between assumed dichotomies for 20th Century American History. Even all you non-fiction wary readers should take a look at this book!

Good but the original version with the blue cover better

It's hard to give this book less than 5 stars because I highly recommend it and it can completely change your life. I originally read the version with the blue cover which I found out later is apparently the one that wasn't edited after Yogananda's death. Many years later I repurchased this red cover version because it came with the free CD and I figured.. how different can it be? Well, it is very different. The pictures are different. It has more recent pictures of what is apparently the newer leaders of SRF after Yogananda's death. Some of the amazing older pics from the original book were removed which is just heartbreaking for me. I can tell it just isn't the same vibration. I wasn't getting the same feel. So a few days into it, I put the book down and just bit the bullet, got over my penny pinching self, and re-ordered the blue version. I would say, if you are interested more in the SRF organization, buy this one. If you want the more original version that Yogananda himself wrote, get the blue one. The blue version is also free online, I downloaded it, but nothing like having a book in your hands. Especially one that has a healing vibrational quality to it.

Answers to explain and deepen my Catholic faith.

For decades many questions regarding my Catholic faith went unanswered. Nobody, no priest, no book, no other religion could answer my questions. Others have tried and failed to sway my thinking by highlighting the criticisms and failings of the Catholic Faith. I needed true knowledge to take me into deep and sustained contemplation on humanity's relationship with the Divine.
At last, in this book, lie not the answers, but questions that answer my questions. For the reader who seeks answers, it will be slow reading as much of what is written will lead down a path of contemplation and introspection. It is full of references with well developed footnotes, making it pertinent for any time period.

I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers

As an instructor of world religions, I have long enjoyed and learned from reading the great Indian spiritual writers, whether their commentaries on Vedic literature or their own autobiographies. Paramahansa Yogananda's autobiography is a splendid work guaranteed to hold the interested reader in rapt attention.

One feature of this work that I especially appreciate is its humor. The yogi is self-effacing and wry, and he approaches profoundly spiritual and meaningful subjects and experiences with a lightness of heart that keeps his narrative on the earthly plane even while inspiring the reader to transcend mundane realities. The text presents the timeless teachings of ancient India in a way that is accessible and attractive to a modern Western reader.

Paramahansa Yogananda was truly an enlightened soul who sought guidance from truth-tellers, whether his own mentors or the divine. In his commentary on the New Testament, he wrote that the teachings of Jesus Christ "reveal the perfect unity that exists among the revelations of the Christian Bible, the Bhagavad Gita of India, and all other time-tested true scriptures." In his trademark gentle way, Paramahansa Yogananda reverenced the teachings of all who spoke truth and taught love.

Through this autobiography, we learn not only about the life and teaching of Paramahansa Yogananda but also of yogis and others who directly mentored or otherwise inspired him -- Nagendra Nath Bhaduri ("The Levitating Saint"), J.C. Bose, Ram Gopal Muzumdar ("The Sleepless Saint"), Babaji (The "Yogi-Christ of Modern India"), Therese Neumann ("The Catholic Stigmatist") and many others. And through the many characters introduced to us in these pages, we learn the wisdom of the Indian ages.

This book (and other worthy titles) comes from the Self-Realization Fellowship, which the author founded in 1920s. This particular edition is the one to buy, because it includes the author's additions to the original 1946 edition and other elements not in the first edition.

This book is to my spirit what a cool swim is on a hot summer day. I revel in its refreshment and revivification.

Must Read!

Mr. Gaston's story inspired and filled me with hope. His unshakeable self-confidence and ability to work with others allowed him to be very successful in a time when many were not doing well. He gives a clear view of successful Black people in the Civil Rights Era which speaks to my age range (mid 40s) about what our parent's parents were doing back then before Malcolm X was killed. Mr. Gaston describes his loving marriage and family ties. He demonstrates that with the right spouse and team, a man can help thousands (or more) of people lift their standard of living. Also, if you want a different perspective of the Civil Rights movement from the wealthy point of view, this is the right book for that. He uses the term 'Negro', instead of 'Black' or 'African American' and that may be a problem for some. I answer to all of those so I was able to really enjoy this book, "Green Power: The Successful Way of A.G. Gaston".

wealth building enables one to influence events and persons history may otherwise forget.
