Must Read for Doctors Looking for a Different Way

Rarely do physicians give up their keys to the "Doctor's Lounge" and descend into the trenches where patients hide out to heal from their illnesses and wounds - out of sight of the medical establishments charged to care for them. Dr. Ken Hamilton is one such physician. He gathered a group of patients who needed what was not being provided: support and a different way to heal when left with partial or no solutions from the medical world. And he did something remarkable. He "entered into relationship" with these patients. Together they created a model for a support group called H.O.P.E., and they now walk a common road together - a road called "healing."
I'm torn between recommending this as a book for patients or as a must read for doctors. Here's why. In this day, when malpractice insurers consistently tell physicians that the single most important thing they can do to stem the tide of lawsuits is to "improve their relationships with their patients," these physicians might do well to look to Hamilton as an example. Not all surgeons should sheath their scalpels as Hamilton did in order to participate more directly with patients in the healing process, nor would we expect them to. But every physician must weigh what "medicine" has cost him or her in terms of estrangement from patients they were once committed to serve, and the loss of a sense of Soul in medicine. They must balance it with whatever "gains" make it worth five minute blitz appointments. Perhaps they are caught between a high maintenance personal lifestyle and healthcare reimbursement systems that are strangling all of us - physician and patient alike.
So if you are a physician reading this review and are no longer satisfied with where you find yourself and your patients today, take the time to read "SoulCircling" by Hamilton. Suspend your judgments that your way is the only way and follow one physician's story and his results in truly partnering with patients. Meet your patients as people in the place called Soul. You may never return to practicing medicine in quite the same way.

A gimpse into a young girl's hell

I cannot express my sorry enough that young girls have gone through the hell that the heroine of this story and her sister did. Reading this novel was looking into the soul of a young girl trying to keep her balance and protect her sister. If you don't believe incest happens or you believe that young girls seduces their father, uncle, brother, or cousin then don't read this book you won't believe it. I you want to read about a girl's love for her sister and her desire to protect her from the ravages of her father then read it. You will like the ending.

Amazing what some children have to go through from their own parents!! Could not put this book down! If the author is reading this, my heart goes out to the sisters in this story. Unfortunately, this story is something that happens my more frequently than one could imagine!

About the Author
Emily Crawford is a lecturer and Director of the Sydney Centre for International Law (SCIL). She teaches international law and international humanitarian law, and has delivered lectures both locally and overseas on international humanitarian law issues, including the training of military personnel.

Alison Pert lectures at the University of Sydney in international law, specialising in the use of force and international humanitarian law. She is a qualified barrister and has practised as a lawyer in government and the private sector in London, Papua New Guinea and Australia. She has represented Australia at international organisations including Unidroit and UNCITRAL, and in treaty negotiations.
