About the Author

J. C. Das is a Staff Consultant on Electrical Power Systems with AMEC Inc., in Tucker, Georgia. He is Life Fellow of IEEE (UK), Fellow of IET (India), and has authored approximately sixty technical papers and published 190 study reports of real-world power systems. He is the author of two other books, Power System Analysis: Short-Circuit Load Flow and Harmonics, Second Edition, and Transients in Electrical Systems: Analysis, Recognition, and Mitigation. He is a registered P.E. in the states of Georgia and Oklahoma, C.Eng. in UK, and Eur Ing in Europe. J. C. Das is also a member of CIGRE, Federation of European Engineers, and other technical associations and organizations.

You will be short-changed

Presumably the reason why somebody would want to buy this book is to learn more about arc flash. Well, to be brief, you're not going to! This book is a real ripoff. It's a long enough book, but there's just not enough on this topic, and the rest is filler. Short circuit calculations, protective relaying, insulation coordination, etc. etc. are all important and useful EE topics, but they are not arc flash hazard or arc flash PPE. The book is some 614 pages long. One 39-page long chapter deals with arc flash hazards. Personal protective equipment (PPE) gets no chapter at all and is not even listed in the index in any context. The rest of the book is EE information you can pick up from dozens of good textbooks. What was the publisher thinking about in publishing this book??

If you need to have information on arc flash hazards or PPE for arc flash safety purposes, buy yourself a copy of NFPA 70E or IEEE 1584 standards. Both these books actually have information you need and can use. Das's book does not; it's pathetic.

The author writes well and is knowledgeable, so why the publishers did not make him stick to the topic is incomprehensible. One answer, of course, is that the situation with regards to technical editors at the publishing houses is often not good. There's a flood of proposed book topics, and the assigned editors all too often lack the technical expertise to judge the goodness of the submission. What's even worse (as I can attest from my experience in other cases), is that the editor will send out the proposed manuscript to outside reviewers, get very negative feedback, ignore it, and just publish what they should not have published.

Premier Arc Flash analysis and mitigation refrence Book.

This book is one of its kinds and there is no other parallel book in the market. I have found it very useful to understand arc flash hazard, a subject much confused in the recent times.

The book provides practical ideas of limiting the arc flash hazard with innovations in system designs and protections and speaks of the immense experience of the author on this subject.

Being heavily involved in industrial power distribution systems, I found it a state of the art book, with many case studies and calculations of arc flash hazard in a number of practical system configurations. The refrence had very useful data, discussions and technical information on the innovations going on in the industry, like zone interlocking, coordination of protective devices instantaneous basis, microprocessor based technologies applied to protective relays, arc flash detection systems and the like.

The chapters on arc flash hazard calculations on dc systems is interesting--I believe there is no equivalent research work done in this aspect and also the last chapter 16 on application of Ethernet and IEC 61850 communications for pooling the vast data.

I agree with the comments of Lanny Floyd, Fellow of IEEE, who is nationally and internationally known expert in safety. In his Foreword to the book he writes: "J.C. Das has researched this body of knowledge and brought together innovative ideas and practical concepts with abundant references and real world case studies in arc flash analysis and mitigation.

For the first time, design engineers, facility managers, safety professionals and operating and maintenance personnel have a common comprehensive reference for prevention methods." I absolutely recommend this book to anyone engaged in arc flash hazard analyses and mitigation.

About the Author
Paul M. Kennedy is J. Richardson Dilworth Professor of History at Yale University. He regularly publishes in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Book Review, the Atlantic, and many other periodicals and scholarly journals. The author of thirteen books, he is perhaps best known for The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. His most recent publication (2006) is The Parliament of Man: The Past, Present, and Future of the United Nations.

A Disturbing Book, in Many Ways

Without taking a definite position on Mahan or geopolitics,
the book presents British naval power as a textbook example
of how an island nation became first a regional naval power
and then rose to global pre-eminence. The parts about how
the first wave of global trade interacted with the Industrial
Revolution are especially interesting.

It then goes on to describe how a mixture of politics, social
problems, and economic neglect weakened the British Navy, at
a time when newly industrialized countries like Germany,
Japan, and America were becoming stronger.

The end of the story is well known, as two Pyrrhic Victories
against Germany shattered the British Empire in the 20th century.

As an American, I find the description of how Britain in the late
1800s neglected its education system and engaged in trade policies
which destroyed the physical economy to be much too close to home.
This book can be read as a cautionary tale of what could happen to
the United States is we are not careful.

MISLEADING, BIASED, YET INFORMATIVE.

The title of this book, in my opinion, is misleading. I was expecting Specifications of British Naval Vessels, Research & Development in Vessel Engineering, Naval Strategy, Naval Tactics, Seamen's skill sets & equipment vis-a-vis their main opponents during periods of peace & war etc during the rise & fall of British Naval Mastery. Instead this book was about British Geopolitics & Macro-economics & the British Navy's role within that framework. As interesting as this topic is, I was disappointed because I wanted to read a different book. However, this book does a decent job in addressing what this book is really about, albeit it being biased towards Britain being some kind of Holy Nation. The Author doesn't even mention once the term "Opium War(s)" or "Concentration Camps" which the British invented during the Boer War. The Author comes across as if Britain was doing the whole World some kind of favour by expanding & consolidating her interests. Very little was mentioned that Britain was emulating Portugal's & Holland's lead, they were the real pioneers of Colonialism & International Finance. Give me a break!

I will now succinctly describe Britain's geopolitical strategy during their rise & zenith: Assuming Britain was one of the top three nations in Western Europe, if the number one nation was in conflict with the number two nation, Britain would support the number two nation. If the number two nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If the number one nation was in conflict with the number three nation, Britain would support the number three nation. If two out of the top three nations formed an alliance & there was a conflict between them & some other nation(s), Britain would support the weaker nations. While this was going on or not, Britain would expand & consolidate her overseas Empire whilst always either developing the strongest Navy on the planet or maintaining the strongest Navy on the planet. Throw in some skewed diplomacy, an obsession with Naval Blockades & voila, you have an enormous Empire while the rest of Western Europe was too busy asleep at the wheel to realise what was going on, even though they themselves were losing colonies all around the World to Britain. If you are wondering, how did they afford all this, the answer is that they had a very small Army, constructing vessels was not as expensive as in modern times, they invented Central Banking in 1694, the public accepted fiat currency once it was introduced & no nation came even close to them in the magnitude of international trade once they got to the zenith. Pretty simple if you ask me & you probably do not need to read the book anymore.

On the positive side, this book is well written, broken up in chapters that are logical i.e. the different periods during the rise, zenith & fall of the British Empire. Some interesting tables in regards to nation comparisons, vessels, macro-economic data etc during different periods. The improving & then decline in Britain's macro-economy is also well described, discussing inflation, national debt, trade deficits/surpluses & comparisons with other nations. For the Naval Strategists out there, the Author does sprinkle Mahan & Mackinder throughout this book, however I found it superficial & it left me wanting more. The Author also gets into the pivotal agreements over a short period of time which secured American hegemony, the passing of the baton, if you wish. Thank you Mr Kennedy for your contribution in this field, even though the title of your book was misleading & you are biased.

the last of a breed

The book is subtitled The Science of Sir Barnes Wallis. I find that subtitle a little misleading as it should more accurately be The Engineering of Sir Barnes Wallis. In any case the focus is on the trajectory of Wallis' engineering work from his first days in airship design to his last ideas for supersonic transport. The large format of the book has allowed a high level of illustration with many contemporary photographs and drawings as well as some modern CAD renderings of concepts that never reached realization. The organization of the book is straightforwardly chronological with a biographical introduction and a final summary and appreciation of Wallis' work. Iain Murray has done a lot of research into various archives and the footnotes are relatively extensive. A number of appendices are attached and the extensive log of spun bomb tests illustrate just how intensive this work was. The coverage is relatively well balanced with four of the chapters devoted to the WW2 work on bombs,one each for the prewar work on airships and geodetic aircraft, and three on his postwar ideas for highspeed and other types of aircraft.
I though the writing was clear and direct and the judgements made on Wallis' work were thoughful and fair, laying great emphasis on the true originality of this work though not losing sight of practical problematic issues. The level of presentation is wholly descriptive with no mathematical content but technical matters are well explained.
So what impression does this well crafted book leave me with? I think Barnes Wallis was the last in the long line of Victorian mechanical engineers. In confronting problems of air transport or delivery of explosives from the air, Wallis seemed to always apply mechanical solutions, often unique and unprecedented. His mathematical skills were considered high by his peers but he seemed to have used mathematics to confirm his solutions, not develop them. I am not sure his aerodynamic intuition was as good as his mechanical creativity but that may be a poor judgement on my part.
In any case, this book certainly give us enough material to think about these questions and I recommend it to those with an interest in this area.

An under-appreciated man

Sir Barnes' work (the Wellington bomber, and the Bouncing, Tallboy, Grandslam bombs) had a major effects during World War II. The Wellington was quick to build, tough and effective. The Bouncing bomb and the attack on the dams had a major impact on Nazi Germany's war production. The rush to repair to the M�hne, Sorpe and Eder dams and the damage caused by the flooding, pulled material and workers from all over Nazi-held territories. On D-day, the Atlantic Wall was incomplete due to lack of material and workers. The Nazi's fielded few tanks on for the battle of Kursk due to lack of steel. The Tallboy and Grandslam attacked V1, V2 and V3 sites, preventing their use against British civilians and Allied soldiers. Sir Barnes deserves much more credit than he has been given.

Also read "Dam Dusters, The Race to Smash the Dams" 1943 by James Holland, Holland goes into more detail about the effects of the raid on the M�hne, Sorpe and Eder dams.

Fantastic adventures in the land of Arabian Nights..

I will say that Husain Haddawy's translations of "The Arabian Nights" are the best you'll read for quite some time. I've had these books for awhile now and they're great. Haddawy has done a remarkable job and provides great introductions for both books. A map is also provided in each book showing the locales mentioned in the stories.
There are really two volumes you will need to get the complete collection. This volume has the earlier stories as told by Shahrazad, classic tales of mystery, fun, and excitement.
The second book " The Arabian Nights II" has the more popular stores most people are familiar with. Sinbad the Sailor, Ali Baba and the Fourty Thieves, Ala al-Din (Aladdin) and the Magic Lamp.
Be sure to get them both and you'll be transported to the mystical lands of Arabian Nights. Enjoy.

So much more than I expected! Accept no other translation!

I really had no idea how much I would enjoy this! I came to it with some vague recollections of some of the tales as they had been adapted into children's stories, but I soon discovered I actually knew almost nothing about the Arabian Nights.
The introduction was extremely helpful in explaining the history of the Arabian Nights, why there are different versions, and why those different versions may contain different tales. This volume collects the oldest, "original" tales. More familiar stories that were added later--such as Sinbad and Aladdin--are collected in a separate volume, Arabian Nights II.
This translation is an absolute joy to read. The language is vivid and alive--thoroughly modern, yet (judging from the effect on me as a reader) certainly successful in conveying the nuances of the original text.
I glanced at the Modern Library Burton edition after reading this. It reads like a King James Bible. Why subject yourself to a translation that you to re-translate in order to read--especially with a wonderful modern translation like this available? How terribly that must choke the pace of the stories!
I felt like the King himself as I read this, knowing that I needed to put it down to go to sleep, but constantly telling myself, "Well, maybe I'll push on for just one more night..." Funny, sexy, violent, and packed with magic and adventure, it really had it all.
Except for children, for whom the original tales are too sexual and violent, I can hardly imagine an audience this WOULDN'T appeal to!

Best version of the "Nights" -- hands down!

I have loved the Arabian Nights since I was a kid. But its fame as a "children's book" has often been a disadvantage -- most editions are simplified, hobbled and sanitized. The unedited versions geared more for adults are a hundred years old, and often show their age. Burton, for example, is an impressive edition but the language is almost a parody of High Victorian English. This edition by Haddawy is almost as perfect as it could possibly be. First, the introduction is wonderful and definately worth reading on its own -- how many times can you say *that* about a book? It sets the stage for understanding the work, the problems in translating it, and the world the Nights came from. It is clearly, smoothly written. These strengths are carried over to the main text as well. The writing is so direct, modern, vivid, and thrilling! It effortlessly takes you into this vanished world of danger, love, magic and adventure. Many expressions are modernized, such as "demon" for "genie" or "God" for "Allah," which work well, although I wouldn't have minded the the more "romantic" terms. Haddawy explains his choice of stories... the full original text only contains about 300 nights worth of tales. Most of the famous stories were added later (Aladdin, Sindbad, etc.) in response to greater interest in the work. Readers looking for these stories should check out Haddawy's companion volume, "Arabian Nights II," which has these famous stories and shares almost all the virtues of this volume. Finally, these books are wonderfully put together: great paper, type, binding... very satisfying just as a physical form. For those who loved these stories, or anyone with a sense of adventure, buy this! Buy it now!

Better Than Rosetta Stone, Better Than Living Language

There have been three versions of Assimil Spanish produced throughout the years. One from the 1950's , one from the 1980's, and this new one is from 2014. These aren't simply new editions of the same book, but rather a completely new book with new recordings in each of the three. I own all three and all three are well done and worth using, but of the three this new edition is my favorite and most user-friendly.

The previous version left a lot of white space on the edges of the pages and was difficult to read for many people due to smaller font. This version has corrected that issue and is much easier to read. Every 7 lessons is a review lesson in the books and in the past no audio was provided for the review lessons but in this version there is audio. The speakers on the CDs speak clearly and the audio is great.

Most of you coming here will probably be familiar with the Assimil method but for those of you who aren't the premise is very simple but very effective. One the left side in the book you have the Spanish and on the right side you have English. This makes practice translating back and forth between the languages simple to do. Instead of having a mountain of grammar drills such as the FSI program had which most people cannot stick to long term or being extremely lacking in the practice department such as the Teach Yourself program is, this program takes the middle ground and gives you just enough bite size chunks to feel like you are making real progress with each lesson without overwhelming you.

This program is high priced for what it is, it's true . A paperback book with 100 lessons and 100 audio tracks shouldn't cost this much. I must say , however, it is worth buying regardless. Overpriced programs such as Rosetta Stone, Pimsleur and the like will not even cover a fraction of what you learn in this book. Even Fluenz Spanish which is much better than Rosetta Stone costs hundreds of dollars and only teaches around half of the verb tenses/moods. Living Language's new series even at the "advanced" level don't teach any of the perfect tenses (compound tenses such as "I have eaten", "I had eaten", "I would have eaten" , etc". This book teaches them all, and teaches them painlessly in context rather than throwing grammar charts at you,

After completely this course you really don't need any more formal instruction material and can jump right in the learning from real life material such as from movies, music , etc. If you were to use just one more book after this I can recommend Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses which is extremely well done.

Starting off great. But no mp3 included.

I am enjoying this method so far. I've had the program about 2 weeks and am just in the beginning lessons. I would rate it 5 stars, but the mp3 CD that came with the SuperPack did not actually contain any mp3 files. I've contacted Assimil and hope they will provide the files for me.

My FAVORITE Spanish Learning Program

I am only on lesson 40 but I love this book. This is by far my favorite Spanish learning program. I started doing a lesson per day but then it became more like 3-5 lessons a week since school started. The stories are short, easy to understand, and some are funny or cute. This book makes learning fun which is difficult for me to believe. I have used FSI spanish, Learning Spanish like crazy, Rosetta stone, Spanish Immersion, Pimsleur, Spanish on the Move, and more. The great thing about this book is it does not bog you down. Unlike all the other program, the lesson is only about 1 minute long. I spend 30 minutes or more on it. First, I listen to it without the book, I then read the Spanish side while I listen to it the second time. After trying to figure out what is being said, then I look at the English translation. At that time, I understand the text. I use an app called Audipo (Android) and listen to it as many times as necessary, I repeat those parts that I have difficulties remembering. The goal for me, is to completely understand what is being said. If I happen to memorize the section, then great, if not, that's fine. I am using it mostly as a listening comprehension tool. After 7 lessons, I listen to all the lessons again. It is very easy to go back and go over past material because each lesson is short (about a minute). The book also has the explanation for certain phrases and the literal translations which I find help the information stick. I think Assimil and FSI spanish is the best with helping learn the language. Learning Spanish like crazy was surprisingly useful for phrases and vocabulary that I used in conversations with people on Hellotalk, Skype, and Whatsapp. Memrise and Fluentu are also great tools for learning. I use duolingo but I don't learn anything from it; for me, it is only good as a review of what you know. Good luck!
