This is one of the best, and perhaps the best for many readers' needs, books on two port networks, analysis and design.

There are some analysis methods that are not shown in other books. The presentation is clear and thorough.

Not too bad

*More like 3.5 stars, but I bumped it up because overall it is a good book and worth owning

Overall, I do like this book. The material is very good. The reason that I didn't rate it higher was because of the writer's style. I will expand on this later.
To me, the purchase of this book is worth it just for the first 4 chapters. While the first chapter should be a review for anyone who has any experience with RF, (in fact it can be found in other places too, such as Pozar or Gonzallez), his approach to this is different slightly different than others. For example, reflection coefficient (gamma) is typically defined as gamma = (Z-Zo)/(Z+Zo), when dealing with generalized scattering parameters, the proper way to define this is to be gamma = (Z-Zo*)/(Z-Zo). Now if you dig enough in Gonzallez, you find this equation but it is nearly as quickly forgotten, since almost all examples in the book that follow use a real characteristic impedance in the systems. In this book, he uses complex Zo to create Smith charts to derive parameter for feed back impedances for amplifiers, which he uses in Chapter 3 of the book.

Also in chapter 1, he describes how to transform a two port network into a 3 port network. This would be helpful if you had S parameter data for a common emitter configured amplifier, but were possibly interested in converting it to a common base or common collector configuration.

In chapter 2, he then describes cascading two S parameter blocks together and gives equations which allows for quickly computing the effect on the S parameters from the new cascade network. He then goes into basic amplifier design that it similar to Gonzallez, but is certainly more terse.

In chapter 3, he covers basic conformal mapping theory and how to plot complex characteristic impedance Smith charts. He also uses a lot of the theory covered in chapters one and two in designing an amplifier. For example, he takes two port S parameter data, converts it to three port data so that he can then determine the impact of adding various components in the feed back path. To determine the ideal location, he would map the feedback impedance onto the gamma s Smith chart to determine stability and gain impacts. This is material that I have not seen in other books and is probably worth the price of admission here.

The rest of the chapters are pretty good too. The rest of chapter 3 covers computer optimization techniques with the goal of optimizing circuits. It seems a bit out of place with today's circuit simulation software, but maybe was more relevant when it was written (1992) when you might actually optimize your own circuits in a simulation. That being said, I know that I can use this material for another problem that I am working at work that is not related to circuit design.

A lot of chapter 7 is obsolete by today's standards. He discusses the some available SW packages that have been swallowed up by the RF design tool of ADS. He in fact uses demonstrates many examples using the tool. That being said, he does still provide some insight that is outside of just the SW tool, so it is still relevant.

My biggest issues with this book however are some of the examples. While the examples are relevant, I feel that after he has presented the theory in earlier sections, it gives him license to omit many steps in arriving at some of his numeric examples. Additionally, some of his theoretical derivations are not well explained. Fortunately, he does eventually demonstrate the utility of the theory, it just becomes difficult with his terse explanation in the examples.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn some new tricks with Smith charts and for the chapters on network synthesis (Chapters 4 and 5). Chapter 6 was also pretty good since it discussed approaches to use for broadband matching techniques.
